I taught in mathematics at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) from January 2008-June 2009 and have delivered sessions elsewhere as well, including a series of 74 lectures when working for the IMA. This amounts to around 220 contact hours with undergraduate and postgraduate students at all levels at 47 UK universities. Below are lists of modules and sessions given.
Innovative teaching
While teaching at NTU I completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE or PGCertHE, depending on your preference). You can see the work I completed for this in my online portfolio.
My research is in teaching, learning and assessment in mathematics. You can find out about innovative teaching I have been involved with on my research page.
Modules
Problem Solving (NTU mathematics students; two groups; second year; lectures, group and individual self-directed learning; 23 hours contact per group Jan-June 2009);
Essentials of Living Systems (NTU science students; two groups; first year; computer labs; 10 hours contact per group Oct 2008-Dec 2008);
Professional Skills for IT (NTU science students; first year; computer labs; 26 hours contact Oct 2008-Jan 2009);
Computational and Numerical Methods (NTU mathematics students; first year; computer labs; 26 hours contact Oct 2008-Jan 2009);
Scientific Mathematics (NTU science and business students; first year; lectures and problems classes; 24 hours contact Jan-May 2008).
Individual sessions
Unplanned impact of mathematics (University of Greenwich 'Mathematics and Society' module; final year; lecture, independent working and small and whole group discussion; 3 hours; November 2011);
Introduction to LaTeX (University of Nottingham; mathematics students on MSc and PhD; lecture and computer lab; 2 hours; June 2010).
When working for the IMA in the 2008/9 and 2009/10 academic years I gave 53 lectures on 'Careers for mathematicians' and 21 on mathematical topics 'Cryptography', 'Puzzles' and 'Spin in ball games' to 2,500 mathematics postgraduates and undergraduates at all levels at 47 UK universities.
