History for diversity in the teaching and learning of mathematics
CETL-MSOR Conference 2025, University of Liverpool (05/09/2025). With Ilaria Bussolia, Ciarán Mac an Bhaird, Andrew Potter and Jason Yip.
This workshop will explore the use of historical narratives to foster inclusivity, enhance student engagement, and create a stronger sense of belonging in university mathematics - especially for under-represented groups. In particular, we will explore the following themes:
- Historically overlooked mathematicians;
- Mathematics and statistics with problematic stories;
- Historical perspectives and student confidence and identity in mathematics;
- Historical mathematical methods to solve modern problems.
We are members of the History for Diversity in Mathematics Network, supported by the Isaac Newton Institute and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which aims to build a network around using history of mathematics to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the mathematics curriculum in UK HE. Attendees will hear about the network and be encouraged to join.
