Teaching modelling for sustainability
CETL-MSOR Conference 2023, Cardiff University (07/09/2023).
Abstract:
One way to diversify the curriculum is to present content that aligns with students' interests. Sustainability is a major theme in modern society, for example the UN set out 17 Sustainable Development Goals to tackle the world's biggest problems by 2030. This is a broader topic than many might realise, with Goals around poverty, hunger, health, education, gender and other inequalities, as well as topics such as climate action, life, consumption and energy.
Mathematical modelling underpins developments across the set of UN Sustainable Development Goals. This talk will discuss teaching and assessment in a final year module themed around sustainability, presenting a variety of modelling approaches addressing a variety of application areas.
