The role of partially-automated assessment in assessing individual contribution to group projects

E-Assessment in Mathematical Sciences, Newcastle University (13/09/2016).

Abstract:
Group work is generally accompanied by concerns around whether all students are contributing equally or whether some are getting credit for work they didn't do. Teaching and assessment of a group project which also contained an element of individual work will be described. In a situation where standard e-assessment and exam conditions are not optimal methods for assessing individual work on a topic, an approach to individualised assessment using the partially-automated Numbas 'worksheet' mode will be detailed. In addition, this presentation will discuss various methods for measuring individual contribution to group work and their merits, and ask whether this partially-automated assessment approach has a role to play.
