Teaching and assessing unseen problem-solving when exams are taken online at home
Planning ahead with a bag of new tricks, what does this mean for your mathematics teaching?, Teaching and Learning Mathematics Online (TALMO) (09/06/2021). With Alex Corner.
Abstract:
The exam for our final year BSc Mathematics module Game Theory and Recreational Mathematics presents students with unseen problems they may not be able to solve and we mark their approaches to solving these. This presents various issues when the exam is taken online at home, and we designed an alternative assessment to cover the same learning outcomes. This talk will briefly present the pre-COVID-19 assessment context, the reasons this broke in the pandemic, our solution and our experience of running this twice. This may be of interest to people planning how to assess in an online context or looking to move away from timed examinations for any reason.
